Top 5 Best Action Movies of All Time
1. Apocalypse Now (1979)
Apocalypse Now (1979) is a movie like no other. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, it stars Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall and Martin Sheen in an unorthodox version of the Vietnam War.
The story follows Sheen’s character, who is sent on an expedition to kill a renegade Green Beret. It’s an exploration into the depths of moral ambiguity, examining gritty themes such as the consequences of war and its effect on people and their motivation for power.
It’s been lauded as one of the most influential films of all time, and is still widely praised to this day – it’s not uncommon to find it featured at film festivals or even mentioned in academic lectures.
If you’re interested in delving deeper into this dark yet stunningly beautiful masterpiece, then Apocalypse Now is definitely worth watching.
2. Die Hard(1988)
Die Hard is truly a classic movie and a great example of an action-thriller. It’s the first in the franchise that tells the story of New York City cop, John McClane, as he unwillingly finds himself in a dangerous hostage situation with some German terrorists.
As if that wasn’t enough of a challenge on its own, John is completely alone and must rely on his wits to get out of this extremely difficult scenario.
There are shootouts, fistfights, explosions and all sorts of over-the-top stunts throughout the movie that help make Die Hard an absolute classic and one great way to spend your time when you have nothing else going on.
3. The Matrix (1999)
The Matrix is an iconic sci-fi movie that pushed the boundaries of special effects and storytelling when it was released in 1999. Keanu Reeves plays Neo, a hacker who discovers that what he thought was reality is actually an artificial world – the Matrix – created to repress humans.
To fight against this oppressive control system, Neo allies himself with a group of rebels who, together, battle to save mankind from doom.
Featuring groundbreaking action sequences and jaw-dropping visual metaphors for human despotism and rebellion, The Matrix set the template for Hollywood’s modern-day love affair with computer-generated imagery.
4. Gladiator (2000)
Gladiator (2000) is one of my favorite movies of all time. Directed by Ridley Scott, it stars Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a powerful and respected Roman general who is betrayed and sold into slavery.
His quest for retribution leads to ultimate glory for Maximus in the form of his return to Rome and a final battle in the Coliseum. The fight scenes in this movie are epic, with captivating uses of slow motion at some key moments that take the viewer’s breath away.
Although most of the plot of Gladiator seems implausible if taken literally, it nevertheless inspires thought about power, justice, and human spirit that still resonates today. Crowe has certainly earned his Best Actor Oscar for this remarkable performance!
5. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Mad Max: Fury Road was an absolute blast to watch. It’s been a few years since its release, but I can still vividly recall the intensity and excitement of the movie.
From its fast-paced car chases full of vibrant explosions to its intense fighting sequences at dizzying heights, Mad Max: Fury Road had it all. Although the story was simple, it still managed to retain an important moral message about never giving up.
The visuals were stunning too, and there was a certain beauty to all the chaos that ensued throughout the movie. Ultimately, what made this film amazing was its ability to combine sensory-rich action with meaning; a balance that not many films are able to achieve.
